The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Ozone High Pollution Advisory (HPA) for Friday, June 6, 2025.

Take Action

  • Drive less, carpool, use public transit, or telecommute. For information on transportation alternatives, visit ShareTheRide.com.
  • Fuel your vehicle after dark or during cooler evening hours.
  • Reduce wait time in long drive-thru lines. Park your vehicle and walk inside at coffee shops, fast-food restaurants, curbside pick-up, and banks.
  • Use low-VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or water-based paints, stains, finishes, and paint strippers.
  • Delay large painting projects until HPAs have passed.
  • Properly seal containers of household cleaners, garage and yard chemicals, and other solvents to prevent vapors from evaporating into the air. Eliminate wood burning in fireplaces, stoves, chimeneas, and outdoor fire pits.
  • Avoid using leaf blowers. Use a rake or broom to keep debris out of the road and away from storm drains, ditches, and streams.
  • Conserve electricity.

HPA Restrictions

  • Wood burning in residential fireplaces, chimeneas, outdoor fire pits, and similar outdoor fires is prohibited in Maricopa County. This includes individuals and businesses which have burn permits for open burning.
  • Employees and contractors of government entities are prohibited from operating leaf blowers. Residents are encouraged to avoid leaf blowing.
  • Off-highway vehicles are prohibited from being used.

Transportation Coordinators

Due to unhealthy levels of particulate matter, all Transportation Coordinators are requested to email employees and activate your HPA plans. The department encourages the use of alternative modes of transportation, especially when pollution levels are expected to be on the rise.

Ozone: Ground level ozone is formed by a chemical reaction that needs heat from sunlight, nitrogen oxides and VOCs to form. The months of April through September make up our Valley’s longer-than-normal "ozone season."

"High Pollution Advisory" or "HPA" means the highest concentration of pollution may exceed the federal health standard. Active children, adults, and people with lung disease such as asthma should reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion.

Avian Influenza detection in a third commercial farm in Maricopa County

Avian Influenza detection in a third commercial farm in Maricopa County donald.bolger@… Mon, 06/02/2025 - 19:36 Search Bulletin Avian Influenza detection in a third commercial farm in Maricopa County

Poultry at a third commercial farm located in Maricopa County have tested positive for Avian Influenza. When the poultry began showing clinical signs consistent with avian influenza on May 29, 2025, samples from the location were submitted to the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (AZVDL) for preliminary determination, then submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) for confirmation, received on May 30.

Eggs produced after the onset of clinical signs of illness have not entered the food supply, and there have been no signs of illness in humans. Consumers in Arizona and around the nation can remain confident in the safety and quality of eggs and egg products. The Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA) has engaged with the USDA, Arizona Department of Health Services, Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, and Maricopa County Department of Public Health to ensure a quick and appropriate response to addressing this animal disease emergency.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the risk to the general public is considered to be low with those most at risk of exposure being individuals who are directly involved with the daily care of birds. Information regarding protective actions for workers and the monitoring of avian influenza can be found on the CDC’s website, which is updated regularly.

The affected poultry farm has been placed under quarantine on the recommendation of the Director of the AZDA and the AZDA State Veterinarian. Enhanced biosecurity measures are in place and efforts are underway to perform virus elimination. All applicable sanitation responses have been quickly implemented. Our dedicated and experienced team continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure consumer protection is always maintained.

Sick Bird Hotline: If you see signs of illness in your poultry, report them immediately to USDA at 1-866-536-7593. You can also contact your local cooperative extension office, local veterinarian, or your State Veterinarian. For wild bird illness, please contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Interagency Fire Managers Implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Across Northern Arizona and Southern Utah Due to Rising Wildfire Risk

Thu, 05/29/2025 - 16:16
Interagency Fire Managers Implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Across Northern Arizona and Southern Utah Due to Rising Wildfire Risk lorenzo.zazuet… Thu, 05/29/2025 - 16:16 Search Bulletin Interagency Fire Managers Implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Across Northern Arizona and Southern Utah Due to Rising Wildfire Risk

Due to rapidly increasing fire danger, interagency fire managers are implementing Stage 1 Fire Restrictions beginning June 1 at 12:01 a.m. on BLM and NPS managed, unincorporated Private, and State lands in Washington, Kane and Garfield counties (excluding lands managed by the US Forest Service, Dixie and Fishlake National Forests in these counties), all Arizona State Lands including Mohave and Coconino counties, north of the Grand Canyon, NPS Lands within Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, and all BLM-managed public lands within the Arizona Strip District in Arizona including Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.

Residents and visitors should check with respective county and municipal governments for information on fire restrictions in those jurisdictions. Please contact your local fire department or fire warden for specific private land fire restrictions.

Please be aware that fire restrictions will be slightly different among agencies and these restrictions do not apply to incorporated cities and towns. Please check the specific fire restrictions with the respective land management agency before visiting.

Fire managers have reported an increase in wildfire activity, which is anticipated to peak as the weather continues to get hotter and drier in the coming months. Fire restrictions help to limit activities on public lands that are known to be the most common causes of wildfires.

Beginning Sunday, June 1, at 12:01 a.m. these activities are prohibited:

  • No campfires or open fires outside of agency improved and maintained campgrounds and homesites in southwest Utah. Running water is required on cabins or homesites on unincorporated private land. Devices fueled by liquid petroleum are allowed.
  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, charcoal, coal, or wood stove fire, except within a developed recreation site, or improved site.
  • No discharging of fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices outside of incorporated city limits or on public lands (city-specific restrictions may apply). Fireworks are always prohibited on all federal lands.
  • No shooting of exploding targets or tracer ammunition.
  • No cutting, grinding, or welding of metal in areas of dry vegetation. This includes acetylene torches.
  • No use of equipment without a working and properly maintained spark arrestor (if required).
  • No smoking near vegetation or outside of a developed recreation site, personal vehicle, or building.
  • No open fires of any kind are allowed in Zion National Park’s Watchman Campground (Stage 2 Fire Restrictions).
  • Campfires are allowed in improved and maintained campgrounds at Lava Point in Zion National Park.
  • Campfires are allowed at Glen Canyon in established campgrounds within established rings or below the high-water mark, only in areas completely void of vegetation.

Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited year-round on federally managed lands.

Fire conditions as well as localized closures and restrictions are subject to change. Tribal, federal, state, and local mandates are different, they may have some differences in their restriction notices. Variations are possible, and visitors should check with the most local office for area-specific restrictions and regulations.

Violation of restrictions is punishable by fine, imprisonment or both. Violators may also be held personally responsible for reimbursement of fire suppression costs.

To further help to prevent wildfires, never throw cigarettes out of a vehicle window. Use an ashtray instead. Never park a vehicle over dry grass as the underside of a vehicle can get hot enough to ignite the vegetation. Make sure your vehicle is in good operating condition, tires are well inflated, and check for any dragging metal or chains from towed trailers.

Local, state, and federal fire officials urge the public to use their ‘Fire Sense’ to help prevent unwanted wildfires. ‘Fire Sense’ is an interagency fire awareness campaign that was implemented in 2021 to increase public knowledge on how to prevent wildland fires. For more information on preventing unwanted human caused wildfires, agency-specific restrictions, and reference maps, visit Utah Fire Sense, Utah Fire Info and Arizona Interagency Wildfire Prevention and Information or follow us on X @UtahWildfire.

Areas of Coconino County to enter Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on Friday

Areas of Coconino County to enter Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on Friday judy.kioski@az… Thu, 05/29/2025 - 08:06 Search Bulletin Areas of Coconino County to enter Stage 1 Fire Restrictions on Friday

With the potential for continued warm, dry, and windy conditions throughout Northern Arizona in the coming days, Coconino County will expand fire restrictions in alignment with area National Forest decisions. Restrictions will go into effect this Friday, May 30, 2025, at 8:00 a.m. The City of Flagstaff is also entering Stage 1 fire restrictions on Friday.

County fire restriction stages are:

  • Stage 2 Restrictions – Apache-Sitgreaves - All unincorporated lands within the boundaries of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, to include Forest Lakes.
  • Stage 1 Restrictions – Coconino National Forest - All unincorporated lands within the boundaries of the Coconino National Forest.
  • No restrictions for the unincorporated lands within the boundaries of Kaibab National Forest.

Fire restrictions are implemented to help prevent human-caused fires and to limit the exposure of visitors during periods of potentially dangerous fire conditions. Decisions about fire restrictions are a collaborative effort with area land management entities and are based on a combination of carefully measured factors. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, fire activity levels, enduring drought, and available firefighting resources.

During Stage 1 restrictions igniting, building, maintaining, or using a fire fueled by combustible materials such as wood, charcoal, briquettes, and/or coal is strictly prohibited, except within a developed site. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or a developed site. The use of tracer or incendiary rounds of ammunition or explosive targets is also strictly prohibited.

Using a device that is solely fueled by pressurized liquid petroleum or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed only in a developed site. A developed site is defined in the County’s Wildfire Defense Ordinance as an area that is barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding vegetation and combustible materials within a 15 foot radius of the device.

Additional restrictions could be forthcoming if conditions warrant. Fire restrictions typically remain in effect until the region receives significant, widespread precipitation.

The public is reminded to always be extra cautious when recreating on public lands, regardless of restrictions. Violations could result in fines and/or jail time.

For information on Coconino County’s Stage 1, 2, and 3 fire restrictions please visit: www.coconino.az.gov/firerestrictions.

Information about all Arizona state and federal fire restrictions, including an interactive map, can be found at www.coconino.az.gov/eminfo. Under Stage 1 restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal, coal, wood stoves and smudge pots are prohibited, except within a developed recreation site. Smoking is also prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle, building or an official developed recreation site.

Using a device that is solely fueled by pressurized liquid petroleum, propane or LPG fuels that can be turned on and off is allowed in areas that are barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within 3 feet of the device.

Decisions about fire restrictions are based on a combination of carefully measured factors. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, fire activity levels, enduring drought and available firefighting resources.

Additional restrictions could be forthcoming if conditions warrant. Fire restrictions typically remain in effect until the area receives significant, widespread precipitation.

Violations could result in mandatory appearance in a federal court, fines or jail time.

Additionally, the public is reminded that fireworks are always prohibited on all national forests.

Avian Influenza detection at a second commercial farm in Maricopa County donald.bolger@… Tue, 05/27/2025 - 17:15 Search Bulletin Avian Influenza detection at a second commercial farm in Maricopa County

Poultry at a second commercial farm located in Maricopa County have tested positive for Avian Influenza. When the poultry began showing clinical signs consistent with avian influenza on May 21, 2025, samples from the location were submitted to the Arizona Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (AZVDL) for preliminary determination, then submitted to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) for confirmation, received on May 27.

Eggs produced after the onset of clinical signs of illness have not entered the food supply, and there have been no signs of illness in humans. Consumers in Arizona and around the nation can remain confident in the safety and quality of eggs and egg products. The Arizona Department of Agriculture (AZDA) has engaged with the USDA, Avian Influenza Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs, and Maricopa County Department of Public Health to ensure a quick and appropriate response to addressing this animal disease emergency.

Sick Bird Hotline: If you see signs of illness in your poultry, report them immediately to USDA at 1 (866) 536-7593. You can also contact your local cooperative extension office, local veterinarian, or your State Veterinarian. For wild bird illness, please contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Firefighters are responding to the Corral Fire, a 20-acre wildfire located roughly 2.5 miles east of Mormon Lake, 24 miles southeast of Flagstaff.

Resources assigned to the fire include one Hotshot crew, four engines and a water tender.

Crews plan to conduct several hours of firing operations today to contain the fire to a small footprint using forest roads as holding features.

Smoke will be highly noticeable during these operations.

This full-suppression response tactic will allow firefighters to safely contain the fire as quickly as possible in an area that includes some steep and challenging terrain.

Firing operations are expected to conclude by early afternoon and smoke impact is expected to diminish shortly afterward.

The Corral Fire was first reported at roughly 6:30 a.m. Monday. Its cause is under investigation.

Fire managers do not expect to issue any closures, but members of the public are asked to avoid the area of the fire.

Motorists in the area, including those driving on Lake Mary Road, are asked to remain cognizant of firefighters working in the area.
